Cotswolds Harvest

Occasionally the author goes outside his local area. A trip to the Cotswolds (South Warwickshire/Gloucestershire and Worcestershire) is a treat.

The harvest is coming in

In a nearby tree, a plaintiff mewing reveals a Buzzard in a tree, overlooking the scene.

Buzzard (Buteo buteo)

These are big birds, and are often misidentified as the ‘tourists Eagle’.

The great delight (apart from wildlife) in the area are the local villages set in the rolling countryside. The area around Boughton on the Water, and the Slaughter’s (Lower and Upper) are especially pretty.

In the skies around Lower Slaughter are this year’s Swallows, looking like musical notes on the power lines.

Swallow (Hirundo rustica)

Above Boughton on the Water, a pair of buzzards were circling and mewing.

The next day, all that fine weather generates a thunderstorm of great strength. Hiding in Snowshill Manor for the duration allows one to keep dry. Once it passed noisily into the distance, its brooding clouds set a great backdrop to the small garden of the country house.

Perhaps a scene for Turner or Constable? The storm passes, and the sunlight lights up the soft Cotswold Stone of Snowshill.

The stone looks good, even under cloud.

This is Broadway ( as far removed in concept as in distance to the more famous place in New York).

And finally, Upper Swell.

Another quiet place in deepest Gloucestershire.
