Sea Magpies

To the coast for the New Year, by South Gare. At the shore line are Oystercatchers, whose old name, Sea Magpies, alludes to their black and white markings.

Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus)

Their name describes their taste for molluscs well.

One races past its fellow birds with a mussel in its beak.

They prefer their own company

and fly away at the slightest perceived threat.

to land on another stretch of beach, and begin the search for food once more.
