Seals

At Greatham Creek, seals lie on the mud awaiting the turn of the tide.

Once in the water, they look quizzically at me, as I follow their progress in the channel which leads to the North Sea.

Back on the lagoons around Seal Sands, are Dunlin.

Back at the RSPB reserve at Saltholme, the Black headed Gulls and Common Terns have left the island on Paddy’s Pool. Instead the Terns

formed a dread on the island before the visitor’s centre.

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo)

On Paddy’s pool a solitary Little Grebe dived for food.

Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)

It was joined on the water by a skein of Canadian geese, which includes this year’s young.

Canada Geese (Branta canadensis)

The skeins of geese are the harbingers of Autumn, and the success of the breeding season, ensuring the cycle of life will continue into next year.
