Snowdrops, space and Saltburn

At last, the return of this year’s snowdrops.

Normally this blog keeps its eyes on what’s on the ground in my neck of the woods, but occasionally we look to the heavens for wonders, and today was a day when space visited us (rather than the other way round). One such event that has been of interest for a few months is 2012 DA14. This is a hefty asteroid, some 50m in diameter, which passed by a mere 17,200 miles above the earth. But while the world (and I) looked towards this event, another asteroid hit Russia on the same day!

This one exploded in the upper atmosphere with an energy of 500 kT, and causing a sonic boom that injured 1000 unfortunate Russians living in Chelyabinsk. You never can tell…

Meanwhile the next day, no further unpleasant surprises from space, only calm and warmth. The show’s over folks, move on.
