Glazed over

Deep cold has frozen over the waters at the RSPB reserve at Saltholme. The reserve still has birds, as the wardens continue to put out food.

First, some winter visitors, Bramblings.

Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla)

The feeders attract more birds.

Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)

Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)

On the frozen waters, a Greylag Goose wanders by.

Finally a real treat. A pair of Water Rails. This secretive bird is generally hidden in dense undergrowth. Only the snows make them visible.

Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus)

Their orange eyes are quite striking!
