Hedging your bets

I got fed up wth some plants in my back garden (which were a mess and no more) and ripped them up to make way for a ‘natural hedgerow’ which I’ll shortly be planting.  This should be a mixture of Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Dog Rose and Holly, together with wild plants found in the English countryside.  This is a tale that I’ll tell across the coming months, and, fingers crossed, this time next year we’ll have berries for the birds to feed on.  For now, they’ll have to make do with nuts.

So Cafe Twitch has the normal visitors on the sunflower seeds – Greenfinches and Tits.

Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris).

He’s soon joined by a Great Tit.

And then another

The Greenfinch departs, leaving a pair of Great Tits hanging from the nuts (Sid James moment?)

Great Tit (Parus major).

Meanwhile in the space that will be a hedgerow, a wren darts quickly across the ground.

Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)

Up on the TV arial perch a clutch of Starlings

Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)

These keep their distance, unlike the Wood Pigeon that descends for some action.

Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus)

He doesn’t call as it’s the wrong time of year, alas.

Leaves now cover the ground and we are firmly into Autumn.
