Raptors in town

Last weekend, the Bird of Prey Centre visited my woods, during a forest festival.  For me, that’s like taking the sweet shop to the children!

First to display was a White Headed Vulture

He flew around, keeping low to the ground.

White-headed Vulture (Trigonoceps occipitalis)

Next a Golden Eagle – Steppe Eagle cross breed.  Unlikely in nature, but great to see.

I love the next sequence.  You get a sense of the power of his flight.

until he landed

Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

Next, the delight of the show for me, a Barn Owl.  I’ve seen one of these sweep across fields at 4 am in early May a few years ago.  They are rare, elusive and this is the only time I’d seen one in our woods.  Until today!

Barn Owl (Tyto alba)

Finally Makinder’s Owl, which we saw earlier at the bird of prey centre

Makinder’s Owl (Bubo mackinderi)

Whilst all this raptor rapture is going on, the local rooks are circling above, looking on wearily at the action.

Rook (Corvus frugilegus)

Finally, backhome more butterflies on the last of the Budlea.

Small Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis urticae)

All in all a great day!
