Wet & Woodland

The owners of Cafe Twitch went on a short break to somewhere woody and wet (lakes, both natural and man made), where we found some new friends.

First a cheeky Chaffinch, which is an occasional visitor to Cafe Twitch, but seems to own this place.

Birds aren’t part of the seating policy at Starbucks, so our Chaffinch moved to the floor for more titbit action.

Next, a waterfowl poser. Is it, or isn’t it?

I think that’s a Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) in her summer finery

And this is Mrs Tufted Duck and her kinderducks. But she also looks fairly close to a Scaup. But these are very rare as breeders in the UK, so it’s not a Scaup? It sure looks like a duck and quacks like a duck though…

And now to a guest that isn’t supposed to use tables

I love those green legs… but its nest is really close to a super large sports centre. Clearly it isn’t phased by all that goes on around it.

Here’s some pictures of some Mallards, well out of their seasonal best plumage.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

Now out of the water, and onto it’s edge. A few Jackdaws were spotted, freeloading whatever they could.

Jackdaw (Corvus monedula)

And now to end with our competition. Spot the baby frog.

Now, in case you can’t see it, it’s in the middle of the picture.

Common frog (Rana temporaria)

Take care where you’re walking next time you’re in the country, because we don’t want to squish any.
