Feed the Birds, £2 a bag

Even Mary Poppins can’t magic away the effects of inflation, so instead of 2d a bag, it’s now £2 at Cafe Twitch.

But what to feed them with? Well, that depends on what type of bird you’re trying to feed. For Finches etc, I use whole , black sunflower seeds, and I get a constant stream of Greenfinches, House Sparrows, Tits (Great, Blue and Coal) and Chaffinches to dine on my fare. But to incite thrushes and others to la Cafe Twitch, I use livebait – maggots, bought from the local fishing tackle shop, which go down well especially at this time when hungry chicks are still in the nest or about to fledge.

Placing the maggots in a dish (old cake tin) they wriggle, awaiting their destiny.

“Ave Avis

Morituri te salutant”

And soon we get visitors. Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Robins and House Sparrows seem to delight in them.

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos). These seem to hunt the maggots as though they were free in the lawn, rather than served on a plate.

Blackbirds (Turdus merula) seem to do the same. It must be a Thrush thing.

Meanwhile on the Bird Feeder, my garden fusspots will only eat black Sunflower seeds.

Greenfinches (Carduelis chloris).

They like them, as do various tits and anything else that can get a look in.
